Project Narrative

The Hammond Downtown Development District, in partnership with the City of Hammond, retained us to design and deliver a new Welcome Sign for the city. The sign was strategically located south of downtown, adjacent to the heavily traveled Southwest Railroad Avenue.

The design concept drew upon materials and detailing used in Railroad Park and the new downtown pavilion to create visual continuity along the railroad corridor while meeting the established design standards of the downtown area.

The final design features a substantial brick pylon with metal inlays integrated into the brickwork and structural framing for the sign panel. A large planter is incorporated at the base to soften the structure and enhance the landscaping. The sign itself consists of a large, dynamic LED display that allows the city to remotely upload images and messages, effectively promoting downtown events and activities to passersby.

Transform the Ordinary

Wooden dock with two covered pavilions extends over a calm pond at sunset, with a small rowboat tied to the right side and trees silhouetted in the background.
