Who I Am

I am a native of Hammond, Louisiana, and the founder and principal of Roy T. Dufreche & Associates, LLC, a landscape architecture and planning studio serving clients throughout the Gulf South.

I established my original practice in 1990, where it earned a reputation for award-winning landscape architecture, urban design, recreation planning, and master planning. After selling the firm in 2012, I re-established Roy T. Dufreche & Associates in 2014 in response to continued demand from longtime clients and new opportunities across Southeast Louisiana.

For more than 40 years, I have planned and designed parks, communities, campuses, streetscapes, recreational facilities, and private landscapes throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. Every project begins with a careful understanding of the land, its history, and the people who will use it. My work is inspired by the unique character of South Louisiana—its native landscapes, architectural traditions, cultural heritage, and distinctive materials—creating places that feel authentic, timeless, and deeply rooted in their surroundings.

Although I lead a small, highly personal practice, I assemble experienced consultants and trusted collaborators when projects require specialized expertise. This approach allows every client to receive direct personal attention while benefiting from a team tailored specifically to the needs of each project.

From the first hand sketch through construction, I remain personally involved in every phase of the design process. I believe the best work grows from close collaboration, thoughtful planning, and a commitment to creating places that are both beautiful and enduring.

My work has been recognized with numerous awards for design excellence, including honors from the Louisiana Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA)

What I Do

As a landscape architect with more than 40 years of professional experience, I help clients analyze, plan, design, and steward the natural and built environments. My work is rooted in thoughtful observation, creative problem-solving, and a deep respect for the character of each site. Every project is shaped by careful consideration of ecology, culture, client goals, and long-term sustainability to create landscapes that are both timeless and meaningful.

Landscape architecture is a unique discipline that brings together art, science, ecology, engineering, and human experience. I believe the best places are those that not only function well, but also enrich people’s lives and create a lasting connection between the built environment and the natural world.

Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture is the professional discipline dedicated to the thoughtful analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of land and outdoor environments. It skillfully blends art, science, ecology, engineering, and social insight to create spaces that are functional, sustainable, beautiful, and resilient.

I shape meaningful connections between people and their natural and built surroundings. Our work spans from intimate private gardens and residential estates to large-scale public parks, urban plazas, waterfront developments, campuses, transportation corridors, and environmental restoration projects across South Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

With deep regional expertise and a passion for the unique character of Louisiana’s landscapes, I design places that honor the environment, celebrate local culture, enhance quality of life, and stand the test of time. Every project receives a balanced approach that respects natural systems while creating vibrant, enduring outdoor spaces that enrich communities and delight those who experience them.

Master Planning

Master Planning is the art and science of crafting a comprehensive, long-term vision and practical framework to guide the thoughtful development, organization, and stewardship of a site, project, neighborhood, campus, district, or entire community.

I create cohesive, inspiring master plans that thoughtfully integrate land use, infrastructure, buildings, open spaces, circulation systems, and all essential elements. I balance environmental responsibility, social well-being, economic vitality, and aesthetic excellence to deliver places that truly enhance quality of life for generations to come.

My approach combines decades of landscape architecture expertise with a deep understanding of the unique character of South Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. I transform your vision into a clear, actionable roadmap that respects the land while creating vibrant, sustainable, and beautiful spaces.

Recreational Planning

At its heart, recreation planning is about creating places and opportunities that enrich people's lives. It is the thoughtful process of understanding how individuals and communities live, play, gather, and connect with the outdoors, then shaping recreation resources and experiences that meet those needs.

Through careful planning and informed decision-making, recreation planning helps create parks, trails, sports facilities, open spaces, and community programs that are welcoming, accessible, and sustainable. The goal is not simply to provide recreational amenities, but to foster healthier lifestyles, strengthen community connections, enhance quality of life, and ensure that natural resources are protected and enjoyed for generations to come.

Urban Planning & Design

Urban design is the practice of shaping the places where people live, work, gather, and connect. Operating at the scale between individual buildings and the broader region, we create thoughtful frameworks that guide the development of cities, towns, and neighborhoods into vibrant, functional, and memorable places.

My work focuses on the public realm—the streets, parks, plazas, waterfronts, and transportation corridors that form the everyday experience of a community. I believe successful urban environments are more than collections of buildings; they are places where architecture, open space, mobility, and human activity come together to create a strong sense of identity and purpose.

Through careful planning and design, I help create walkable, sustainable, and inclusive communities that support economic vitality, environmental stewardship, and an exceptional quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Why I Still Draw By Hand

People often ask why I continue to draw by hand when there are so many sophisticated digital tools available today. The answer is simple: drawing is how I think.

For me, there is a direct connection between the brain and the hand that no computer can fully replicate. When I put pencil to paper, ideas flow naturally. I am not thinking about software commands or perfect lines. Instead, I am exploring possibilities, solving problems, and discovering ideas that might never emerge on a computer screen.

A sketch is more than a drawing—it is a conversation between my mind and the page. One line suggests another. A shape becomes a space. An idea that begins as a simple mark often becomes the foundation of an entire design. The process is immediate, intuitive, and deeply creative.

Throughout my career, I have found that drawing by hand allows me to understand a place more completely. Whether I am sketching a landscape, a streetscape, or a master plan, the physical act of drawing helps me see relationships, recognize opportunities, and reveal solutions that might otherwise be overlooked. It slows the process just enough to encourage thoughtful observation while allowing creativity to flow freely.

Digital technology is an essential part of my practice. It enables me to refine designs, prepare construction documents, and communicate ideas with clarity and precision. But for me, the creative journey almost always begins with a pencil. Hand drawing remains the foundation of my design process because it engages the eye, the mind, and the hand simultaneously. It is where imagination meets observation, and where every project truly begins.

After more than four decades of practice, I still believe there is no more powerful design tool than a sharp pencil and a blank sheet of paper.

What I Value

After more than four decades of practice, I have learned that successful projects are built on more than good design—they are built on trust. Every project begins by listening carefully, understanding my client’s vision, and developing a genuine appreciation for the land itself. These relationships form the foundation of every design decision I make.

I believe every site has a story waiting to be discovered. Its history, ecology, culture, and physical character provide the clues that shape thoughtful and enduring design solutions. Rather than imposing a preconceived style, I strive to uncover the unique opportunities each landscape presents and create places that feel authentic, timeless, and deeply connected to their surroundings.

No two projects are ever the same, and that is what continues to inspire me. Whether designing a residential estate, a public park, an urban streetscape, or a regional master plan, each project offers new challenges that demand curiosity, creativity, and careful observation. Experience provides perspective, but every project teaches me something new.

I believe innovation and responsibility should go hand in hand. Beautiful landscapes must also be practical, resilient, and environmentally responsible. My work seeks to balance aesthetics with function while respecting natural systems, available resources, and the long-term needs of both people and place.

Although I lead every project personally, I also believe that the best ideas emerge through collaboration. Working closely with clients, architects, engineers, planners, and other design professionals creates stronger solutions than any one discipline can achieve alone. Open communication, mutual respect, and shared purpose are essential to every successful project.

Above all, I value thoughtful design that stands the test of time. My goal is to create landscapes that enrich everyday life, strengthen communities, and leave every place better than I found it.
