Project Narrative

The Hammond Downtown Development District retained our firm to develop a comprehensive landscape master plan for the new roundabouts under construction at the Interstate 12 and U.S. Highway 51 interchange in Hammond, Louisiana. Because the interchange serves as a prominent gateway into the Downtown Development District, the Commission sought a cohesive landscape vision to present to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) for consideration following completion of the roadway improvements.

Our planning process began with the presentation of national and regional case studies highlighting successful landscape treatments for highway interchanges and roundabouts. Building upon this research, we developed a comprehensive design vision that established a strong visual identity for one of the city’s most important entrances.

The master plan included landscape concepts for the interstate off-ramps, planting strategies for each roundabout, and recommendations for integrating public art within the two primary roundabouts to create memorable gateway features. A key component of the proposal was the recommendation to paint the interstate overpass structures using a coordinated color palette inspired by the City of Hammond and Southeastern Louisiana University, reinforcing community identity and creating a distinctive sense of arrival.

The completed master plan was formally presented to both the Hammond Downtown Development District and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development as a long-term vision for enhancing this highly visible transportation corridor.
