Project Narrative

The owners engaged the design team of Holly and Smith Architects and Roy T. Dufreche & Associates to design a new modern residence on a large wooded tract abutting the Tangipahoa River in Tickfaw, Louisiana. Intended as a weekend retreat for the New Orleans-based owners and their extended family, the project focused on creating a comfortable, flood-resilient home that harmonizes with its natural setting.

The design program included a contemporary residence, a large swimming pool, extensive landscaping, and careful preservation of the existing grove of post oak trees surrounding the building site. Particular attention was given to the home’s location near the edge of the river’s flood plain. To address flood concerns, the design team elevated the foundation of the residence, ensuring long-term protection from potential flooding while maintaining strong visual and physical connections to the river.

The site design features a clean, modern landscape composed of both native and ornamental plantings that complement the architecture and enhance the natural wooded character of the property. The pool design draws directly from the modern aesthetic of the home, incorporating a multi-level pool deck and a low fountain wall accented by native grasses, creating a serene and cohesive outdoor living environment.

The completed retreat successfully balances modern design, environmental sensitivity, and family functionality in a beautiful pastural setting.

Transform the Ordinary
