Project Narrative

The owners commissioned us to provide master planning services for the siting of a new home on approximately 20 acres of plantation pine forest in Loranger, Louisiana.

The site presented a unique design challenge — a 15-year-old pine plantation consisting primarily of a monoculture of pine trees planted in regimented north-south rows. While the uniform forest initially offered limited visual interest, our detailed site inventory revealed a naturally developing layer of attractive native understory plants emerging beneath the pines. The master plan capitalizes on this discovery by establishing a rich, layered landscape approach: transitioning from open turf areas to diverse native understory plantings, and finally into the existing pine forest.

The planning process resulted in a strong axial and geometric layout that organizes the access roads, barn, pond, and future residence in a clear, harmonious composition.

Construction of the pond began shortly after the master plan was completed, with the excavated spoils strategically stockpiled for use as fill material at the future home site. Following pond construction, work on the barn commenced, providing the owners with an immediate operational base on the property while the main residence is being planned.

The project is currently in the detailed design phase, with construction of the main residence slated to begin in 2027.

In Their Words

"It is difficult to pinpoint why working with Roy is so delightful. There is so much to say! He’s all the things you’d expect from someone with his tenure: friendly, professional, talented, creative and passionate about his field. But my favorite traits are the personable ones. Roy has a listening ear to really hear and envision what I’m thinking. He is a true project partner and collaborator! He’s honest but gentle when the course needs correcting. I am always amazed how easily he gets in my head and nails it every time!"
