Restaurant One Thirteen
Project Narrative
The owner of Restaurant One Thirteen in Hammond, Louisiana, commissioned us to redesign the restaurant’s large, underutilized front parking lot into an inviting exterior patio and outdoor dining area.
The program called for comfortable guest seating areas featuring fire pits and water features, outdoor dining tables, and the addition of on-street parking to offset the loss of parking spaces within the redeveloped area.
The design process began with a thorough site analysis. The restaurant occupies a modern mid-century building with its entire frontage dominated by a concrete parking lot. The existing entrance was poorly defined and difficult for first-time guests to locate.
The resulting plan focuses on creating a strong sense of arrival by clearly directing visitors toward the front door. Taking advantage of the corner lot location, the design opens diagonal views into the site, enhancing visibility and curb appeal. Design elements were carefully selected to complement the mid-century modern architecture, including monolithic seating, contemporary pavers, integrated fire pit and fountain features, new signage, and extensive landscaping to provide greenery, shade, and visual softening.
Concepts were presented to the Hammond Historic District Commission for review and approval. Following approval, construction documents were prepared and the project was bid on behalf of the owner.
This project will transform a previously unattractive parking area into a vibrant, functional outdoor extension of the restaurant that enhances both the dining experience and the streetscape.
